Redware Thumb Watering Pot

Redware Thumb Watering Pot, handmade by Ken Henderson of Henderson’s Redware in Bangor, Maine. Earthenware pots with sprinkling holes in the base were used from late medieval times through the 1700s, indoors and outdoors. The idea is simple: a pot with a thumb-size hole in the top is plunged into water. It fills up through the holes in the bottom. Put your thumb over the top hole and the water won’t spray out, for the same reason you can’t pour liquid out of a tiny hole in a can with no room for air to get in. Carry it to where you want it, remove your thumb and sprinkle the water over your plants.

Measures approximately 12″ tall.

Ken creates museum quality reproductions of earthenware pottery from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries in the Anglo-American tradition.

Aside from its modern, food safe glaze, this pottery is no different than historic redware and is completely functional within the context of its historical usage.

Suggested care: Hand wash and dry your pottery thoroughly before using. Your piece will last to become a family heirloom.
