Handmade by Chris Becksvoort and modeled after a New Lebanon (Mt Lebanon) Shaker Chest.  Chris has masterfully made this cabinet out of white pine and walnut knobs. Measures 29 3/4" H x 29" W x 18" D. Signed on the back 2024. A special fundraiser for the Shaker Herb House Capital Campaign. Chris is offering this drawer for sale to raise funds for the Shaker Herb House, as it is a super-special project to him and his relationship with the Sabbathday Lake Shakers:
I have been privileged to teach at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community, in the historic 1824 Herb house since the 1990's.  The "shop" was no more than a maintenance area, full of paint cans and scrap wood.  There were a few masonite covered tables, inadequate lighting, and bouncy, sagging floors.  It was a shame to see this venerable old building in such condition.
We now have a chance to not only rehabilitate this historic treasure, but to  turn it into a functioning visitor and education center.  There will finally be upgraded workshop space, a teaching kitchen, display, exhibit & viewing areas, and gathering and meeting rooms.  Lastly, there will also be a large and updated area for the Shaker's traditional herb business.
The purchase of this piece is not tax-deductible but any additional donation added to your cart upon checkout will be.  United Society of Shakers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization. This piece will be shipped via pack and crate through a professional furniture shipper for an additional $850 freight charge OR can be picked up in-person at Shaker Village at no additional cost. Chris is an internationally-known, master cabinetmaker and a long-time friend and neighbor of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community.
INDIVIDUALLY BUILT ... Why invest in furniture from a one-man shop on a dirt road in New Gloucester, Maine? Certainly my prices can't compete with mass produced, factory-made furniture. Production shops deal with the average needs of the average consumer. I build only twenty to thirty pieces each year and can take the time to build a special size or include a small drawer, secret compartment, or carved monogram. I construct each piece individually, taking as much time as I need to achieve perfection. Upon completion I sign, date and register each piece. My clients value the beauty of solid wood and appreciate things finely constructed. A desk I build for you will reward you each time you sit down to write or pull out a drawer, and will do so for a lifetime. Joy is in the details that make a difference.
  • Sturdy as a rock! This table is handmade for Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village by American Stonecraft in Lowell, MA from a rock picked on the property.  This table features a large blue-green-gray stone polished to a mirror-like finish and is firmly attached to dark steel hairpin legs with optional leveling rubber fittings. The Shakers have cultivated their land since 1783. The hedgerows are piled with stones picked from the croplands each spring. These naturally beautiful slabs are created from polished slices of Shaker fieldstones deposited in the earth by glaciers eons ago.  Stamped on the reverse with the name: "Shaker Village, New Gloucester, ME." You will receive the exact table pictured here. Measures approximately 20.75" tall x 17" wide x 12" deep. Local pick up at Shaker Village preferred.  Professional pack & ship can be arranged, please contact us for a price.
