Best SHaker Village Tour In America
“This is a must-see. We’ve been to other Shaker Villages in America. This one is the best because the people who lead these tours know the last Shakers. So, the talk had a personal depth that is absent from the other Shaker sites, that are run by museum companies.”

This classic French blend of rosemary, thyme, marjoram, basil and chervil is our heartiest herbal mixture. A fine additive for rich soups and stews. Good in all tomato dishes and salads. A mixture developed here by the Community. These mixtures have been time tested by the Shaker Sisters and Brethren in our own kitchen to the applause of the Community and our guests. We highly recommend these superior blends. Sold in a 4-ounce tin canister with clear-view top. Net Weight 0.8 oz. Since 1799, the Sabbathday Lake Shakers have cultivated, packaged, and sold to the public the most popular varieties of sweet herbs and medicinal teas. Following that same early tradition, today we offer a selection of gourmet culinary herbs, herbal blends, spices and herbal teas that represent our long and continuing heritage. Our herbs are grown in gardens more than 200 years old, dried in a facility built in 1845, and packaged in tin canisters just like those used by our forbearers throughout the 1800s. Our herbal products represent our continuing commitment to supply our customers with products of high quality and value.

*You will receive the exact bowl pictured here. Hand turned maple bowl made from a Shaker Village tree. One of Sabbathday Lake’s Brother Delmer Wilson’s landmark maple trees planted in front of the Ministry’s Shop in 1898 became dangerously rotten from damage sustained long ago from a severe lightning strike. In 2016, Brother Arnold had it entirely removed along with another monumental maple tree in the front right corner of the Shaker Cemetery, believed to have been planted by Brother Delmer between 1920 and 1935. Four young maples have been planted in place of those two 1898 trees recently cut and two others cut several years ago. Although sad to lose Brother Delmer’s trees, we are excited that their wood didn’t go to waste. Peter Asselyn, expert woodturner and long-time friend of Shaker Village, turned out all sizes of bowls from the recently-removed landmark trees planted by Brother Delmer. We are deeply grateful for Peter’s willingness, appreciation, and commitment to honor the Shaker legacy through his own talents. This bowl measures approximately 11" diameter x 2.25" tall and is signed on the bottom. Features the tap hole from this maple tree! *You will receive the exact bowl pictured here.

Our new line of custom Shaker Village pottery by Jennifer Gammon of Liane Pottery, Lewiston, ME. Stamped with the Shaker Village logo, each piece is a functional keepsake of our favorite place to be ourselves. Honoring the Shaker Herb House and our herb garden, Jennifer has pressed Shaker herbs into each piece where the kiln then burns them off (literally!) and their impression remains forever! Jenn is harvesting herbs from our Shaker Herb Garden to make these beautiful pieces. Every pressed plant piece is unique, the leaves and flowers are pressed into the wet clay by hand where they stay until the piece is partially fired, during the firing the organic matter burns away and leaves behind an impression in the piece. Jenn carefully applies and accent glaze to the impression and glazes the entire piece before it is fired one last time. Choice of: 12 oz Mug in stunning green, measures 3.75″ tall 16 oz Mug in stunning green, measures 4.5" tall Pairs especially well with Shaker tea for the perfect gift set! Shaker Fancy Goods: Shaker Survival Through Sisterhood and Craft by Catherine Goldring Shaker Fancy Goods tells the story of the Shaker Sisters of the nineteenth and early twentieth century who responded to the economic perils of the Industrial Revolution by inventing a lucrative industry of their own—Fancy Goods, a Victorian term for small adorned household objects made by women for women. Thanks to their work ethic, business savvy, and creativity, the tireless Shaker Sisters turned a seemingly modest trade into the economic engine that sustained their communal way of life, just as the men were abandoning the sect for worldly employment. Relying on journals and church family records that give voice to the plainspoken accounts of the sisters themselves, the book traces the work they did to establish their principal revenue streams, from designing the products, to producing them by hand (and later by machine, when they could do so without compromising quality) to bringing their handcrafts to market. Photographs, painstakingly gathered over years of research from museums and private collections, present the best examples of these fancy goods. Fancy goods include the most modest and domestic of items, like the pen wipes that the Sisters shaped into objects such as dolls, mittens, and flowers; or the emeries, pincushions, and needle books lovingly made back in an era when more than a minimal competency in sewing was expected in women; to more substantial purchases like the Dorothy cloaks that were in demand among fashionable women of the world; or the heavy rib-knitted sweaters, cardigans, and pullovers that became popular items among college boys and adventurous women. EDITED BY GLENDYNE R. WERGLAND AND CHRISTIAN GOODWILLIE Shaker Brother Isaac Newton Youngs served his community at New Lebanon, New York, as a tailor, clockmaker, mapmaker, mechanic, inventor, musician and hymn writer, lens-grinder, stonecutter, button maker, bookkeeper, journalist, tinsmith, printer, pipe fitter, joiner, and blacksmith. He built a sundial, made tools including a weaver’s reed, turned clothespins, made knitting needles, and laid floors. He was also an architect and roofer. Few aspects of life at New Lebanon were outside of Youngs’s sphere of activity. Therefore, it is fitting that he undertook to write a comprehensive history of his community, systematically treating all facets of Shaker life and culture. Youngs’s A Concise View Of the Church of God and of Christ, On Earth is printed here for the first time in unabridged form. The editors have carefully transcribed and annotated the text, and have selected illustrations to complement Youngs’s descriptive text. Additionally, appendices supplying vital statistics, and information on the occupations of New Lebanon Shakers (many of which were compiled by Youngs) are included. Finally, a selection of Youngs’s poetry rounds out a rich portrait of the lives and talents of Brother Isaac Newton Youngs, and his beloved Shaker brethren and sisters, as they labored humbly in the creation of a unique world where work was worship, and heaven was all around them. by Thomas Sakmyster This study—the first of of its kind— is a comprehensive examination of one of the most fascinating and colorful periods of American religious history: the Shakers’ Era of Manifestations. Based on a comprehensive reading of primary sources from Shaker communities in Ohio and Kentucky, this volume documents the spiritual highs and lows promulgated by Shaker visionists (spirit mediums) as their gifts impacted their communities in a variety of ways —both positive and negative. Visits from Mother Ann Lee, Holy Mother Wisdom, the Eternal Father, and the Holy Savior (Jesus) are detailed herein, as well as the establishment of outdoor worship sites—Feast Grounds—the reception of gift songs, new dances, and most intriguing of all, interactions with the departed of many races and nations, including an exceptional series of encounters with Indigenous American (Indian) spirits, historical figures like George Washington, and many Shaker founders. Thomas Sakmyster is an emeritus professor at the University of Cincinnati, where he was the Walter Langsam Professor of Modern European History. He has published widely on his areas of specialization, including modern East European history, the American Communist Party, world communism, and Shaker history. He is co-editor of The Shakers of White Water, 1823-1916 and author of The Last Shaker Apostate: Augustus Wager and Union Village, Ohio and articles on various themes in the history of the Shakers. Shaker Studies, no 19, 339 pages, 2024. ISBN: 978-1-937370-40-4 Couper Press Paperback

by Jane F. Crosthwaite In the mid-nineteenth century, both Shaker sacred texts and gift drawings were rich with theological arguments for the millennial vision of a heaven celebrating the Heavenly Father and Holy Mother Wisdom and of a communal society embodying its teachings in celibacy and peace. This richly-illustrated, full color volume, explores these Shaker visions of the divine. Jane Freeman Crosthwaite first encountered the Shakers when preparing a course on women in American religious history for a class at Mount Holyoke College. Mother Ann Lee, her teachings, her followers, and their musical, scriptural, and artistic ventures in theological expression became the focus of numerous seminars, lectures, and articles in the years to follow. Most notably, she and Christian Goodwillie edited Millennial Praises: A Shaker Hymnal which brought together the early, theologically-rich hymn texts with the scattered musical records. Now retired from teaching courses in religion and ethics (and delivering a number of baccalaureate addresses), Professor Crosthwaite has tucked away a teaching award from Mount Holyoke, inclusion in The Princeton Review’s 300 Outstanding Teachers, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Wake Forest University, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, from Queens University of Charlotte. Shaker Studies, no. 18. 242 pages, 2022. Couper Press Paperback ISBN: 978-1-937370-30-5

By Carol Medlicott and Christian Goodwillie The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, commonly called “Shakers,” created a thriving community in the Kentucky Bluegrass beginning soon after 1805. Located near the high palisades over the Kentucky River in Mercer County, Pleasant Hill prospered for over a century, an example of religious devotion made manifest in a setting of architectural and agricultural beauty. Shaker life at Pleasant Hill had many facets, both spiritual and temporal. This meticulously researched and richly illustrated volume presents a fresh exploration of many aspects of life at Pleasant Hill, ranging from the site’s natural setting and its historical and spiritual underpinnings, to the community’s complex ethnic, racial, and gender dynamics, and its plentiful domestic economy. Carol Medlicott is a historical geographer in the Department of History at Northern Kentucky University. Her work considers various aspects of the western Shaker experience and of early Shaker expansion, including settlement patterns, leadership, cultural interaction, cartography, and music. Her major books addressing the Shaker west are Issachar A Shaker's Journey (University Press of New England, 2013) and Richard McNemar and the Music of the Shaker West (co-authored with Christian Goodwillie, Kent State University Press, 2013). Christian Goodwillie is director and curator of special collections and archives in the Burke Library at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He has served as the president of the Communal Studies Association and was honored with their Distinguished Scholar Award in 2021. Goodwillie has authored, co-authored, or edited, twelve books on the Shakers and Freemasonry, as well as publishing numerous articles. Both are good friends of Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village and have presented lectures with us. Publisher: Straggling Trembler Press (January 1, 2022) Perfect Paperback: 291 pages ISBN-13: 979-8987033401

There are many benefits of using clay masks on our skin, including adding minerals and nutrients, absorbing oil and dirt, and tightening our pores. Different clays offer different benefits, so you should choose a mask blend that will benefit your specific needs. This Strawberry blend from Pickle's Potions, apart from smelling and feeling AMAZING, is an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, collagen booster that is rich in vitamin C and trace minerals. Ingredients: Brazilian pink clay, dehydrated strawberries, coconut milk powder, pearl powder, ashwaganda root. Coconut milk: may help with skin flexibility and elasticity. Strawberries: can help remove excess sebum, and is known for lightening skin and acne scars. Brazilian pink clay: a mild exfoliating combination of red and white clays containing copper, selenium, manganese magnesium and zinc that's perfect for sensitive skin. Pearl powder: traditionally used in Asian health care for various purposes due to its anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, adaptogenic and anti-aging properties. Ashwagandha root: native to India and North Africa, it is a treasure trove of potential benefits. It is antibacterial and antimicrobial so it protects skin from infections or acne. It's high in antioxidants which protects your skin from aging free radicals. It helps to keep your complexion vibrant, and it is often utilized as a relaxant due to its natural ability to inhibit cortisol. Each 2 ounce resealable packet contains approximately 8-10 face masks! Directions: Simply mix 1-2 teaspoons of the dry clay mask with your liquid medium of choice. We recommend Shaker Rose Water! Some other favorite options are tea, yogurt, juice, honey, milk, hydrosols, or plain water. When applying a clay mask, the general guideline is to leave it on until it's almost dry, which typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the application and the type of clay used. Here's why timing matters: Initial Moist Phase: Right after application, the clay is moist. During this phase, your skin absorbs the beneficial minerals from the mask. Start of Drying Phase: As the mask begins to dry, it starts the process of adsorption, drawing out impurities and excess oil from your skin's surface. Final Dry Phase: You'll want to rinse off the mask before it fully dries and hardens. When a clay mask dries completely, it can draw out too much oil, leading to dehydration and irritation. This can also cause unnecessary pulling on the skin, which might lead to redness or sensitivity. Leaving a clay mask on for too long can reverse its benefits, causing dehydration and irritation. For sensitive skin types, it might be beneficial to wash off the mask even before it starts drying, to prevent any potential irritation. All Pickle's Potions are made with non-GMO ingredients, and as organic as they can find. Handmade punch needle coasters (set of 4) made from Shaker wool by Bonnie Faulkner of Yarmouth, Maine.Featuring a white background with blue and purple florals on each. Backs are lined with felt to ensure your tabletops do not get scratched.Punch needle is a traditional craft that's been around since the 15th century. Initially known as the 'punch stitch' was primarily used for adorning religious garments. It was also a craft used by men during lengthy sea voyages who would create punched rugs to pass the time between ports. The Shakers have had sheep on their farm for decades and currently have a flock of over 65!
When someone asks me what punch needle is, I tell them it’s miniature version of rug hooking. If they don’t know what that is then I explain you use a hollow thin needle with colored thread running through it. The thread punches through your design on fabric and makes a loop on one side, many loops create an image. It’s very three dimensional in look.
Measures 4" across. Set of 4. Bonnie teaches gel printing, book binding, and punch needle embroidery workshops with us at Shaker Village. -
Handmade Peace Basket by Ange Muhorakeye. The famous “Agaseke,” or “peace basket,” is a basket with a tall, pyramid-shaped lid; historically, it was a symbol of harvest time and plentiful food. The centuries-old tradition of basket weaving has taken on a new significance in the wake of the 1994 genocide, hence why it has been aptly nicknamed the “peace basket.” Following a violent and divisive period in Rwanda’s history during which neighbors and friends were pitted against one another, women were left to pick up the pieces of their broken nation. The country slowly started to heal and rebuild itself through reconciliation and peace-building efforts. The age-old tradition of basket weaving paved a way for women to work collectively towards a renewed future. Regardless of ethnic boundaries or past traumas, women came together and formed artisan cooperatives. Through basket weaving, women were able to reunite, push forth creativity, and develop a way to support themselves and their families financially, all, while preserving an important Rwandese tradition.Made from woven sisal and sweet grass.Measures 9" x 6" Born in a refugee camp in Burundi and later moving back to her family’s country of origin, Rwanda she continued to learn the art of basket weaving from both her nyogokuru (grandmother) and mama (mother). Five years ago, Ange made the decision to leave Rwanda and move to the Maine in the United States. At the airport in Rwanda, Ange’s mother passed to her a package of grasses with a needle and thread, and sent her off with the parting words of “Do not forget our culture.” When Ange realized that there was interest in her baskets in the US, she began to think that perhaps she could collaborate with women from rural communities in Rwanda, offering them the ability to support themselves and their children’s education by commissioning them for growing and dying these materials.
“I create baskets made of sisal plants and sweet grass using a needle. I design each piece with gentleness, skill, and love to achieve special and unique creations. I use half of the sales proceeds to support women and their children from my country to sustain themselves and fight poverty.”
