Best SHaker Village Tour In America

“This is a must-see. We’ve been to other Shaker Villages in America. This one is the best because the people who lead these tours know the last Shakers. So, the talk had a personal depth that is absent from the other Shaker sites, that are run by museum companies.”

  • Handmade woven medium woven bowl/basket by Ange Muhorakeye. This bowl is the perfect for fruit or mail storage, or has a hanging tab to mount on your wall.  Made from woven sisal and sweet grass.
Measures 10" wide x 2.5" tall Born in a refugee camp in Burundi and later moving back to her family’s country of origin, Rwanda she continued to learn the art of basket weaving from both her nyogokuru (grandmother) and mama (mother). Five years ago, Ange made the decision to leave Rwanda and move to the Maine in the United States. At the airport in Rwanda, Ange’s mother passed to her a package of grasses with a needle and thread, and sent her off with the parting words of “Do not forget our culture.” When Ange realized that there was interest in her baskets in the US, she began to think that perhaps she could collaborate with women from rural communities in Rwanda, offering them the ability to support themselves and their children’s education by commissioning them for growing and dying these materials.
“I create baskets made of sisal plants and sweet grass using a needle. I design each piece with gentleness, skill, and love to achieve special and unique creations. I use half of the sales proceeds to support women and their children from my country to sustain themselves and fight poverty.”

  • Handmade Peace Basket by Ange Muhorakeye.  The famous “Agaseke,” or “peace basket,” is a basket with a tall, pyramid-shaped lid; historically, it was a symbol of harvest time and plentiful food.  The centuries-old tradition of basket weaving has taken on a new significance in the wake of the 1994 genocide, hence why it has been aptly nicknamed the “peace basket.”  Following a violent and divisive period in Rwanda’s history during which neighbors and friends were pitted against one another, women were left to pick up the pieces of their broken nation.  The country slowly started to heal and rebuild itself through reconciliation and peace-building efforts. The age-old tradition of basket weaving paved a way for women to work collectively towards a renewed future.  Regardless of ethnic boundaries or past traumas, women came together and formed artisan cooperatives.  Through basket weaving, women were able to reunite, push forth creativity, and develop a way to support themselves and their families financially, all, while preserving an important Rwandese tradition.

  • App - actually Appaloosa. So named because when her hair is shaved she has little black spots that look like an Appaloosa pony. She is a Katahdin sheep, a breed developed here in Maine. She is a hair sheep so she has no commercial value for us, but she is the sweetest sheep you could ever ask for. She gave birth to Sarah and Allie.

  • The A to Z of the Shakers by Stephen J. Paterwic The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as the Shakers, followed Mother Ann Lee to the United States in 1774 when life in England became difficult. In the United States, they established several colonies whose governing principals included celibacy and agrarian communal living. Even at its peak, however, Shakerism claimed only about 4,500 members. Today, except for one active community in Sabbathday, Maine (that's us!), the great Shaker villages are diminished, but the Shakers left an enduring impact on the religion and culture of the United States. The A to Z of the Shakers relates the history of this fascinating group through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 200 cross-referenced dictionary entries on Shaker communities, industries, individual families, and important people. Every definition, biography, and point of history was submitted to the Shakers at Sabbathday Lake for their review before it was included for publication. As such, the voice of the contemporary Shakers is found in the dictionary, and they have given it their unequivocal endorsement. Paperback, 370 pages. Scarecrow Press

  • Barns of Maine by Don Perkins - local author -Signed! Although humble in their function, these carefully crafted barns have shaped the landscape of Maine for centuries. Built long before the days of plastic and plywood, the barns have survived for generations, each with a story to tell. In Bridgton, one barn offered comfort to a 16 year-old boy when his father was injured; another New Gloucester barn was so important to one family that its likeness was engraved on their headstones. Some owners said they would rather see their homes burn than their barns, and others have dedicated their lives and countless funds to restoring and preserving these buildings. From modest English to grand Victorian, Don Perkins examines the structures, origins, and evolution of Maine's barns, demonstrating the vital and precious role they play in people's lives. Features a section on the Shakers' Barn! Signed by the author Paperback, 128 pp  The History Press; Illustrated edition 978-1609495268

Completely hand forged one at a time utilizing the same tried and true methods that have been used for centuries.  Handmade by Dereck Glaser of Winthrop, Maine. As each is hand made, each is unique in design. Dereck has taught and demonstrated through out the Eastern United States for craft schools and various regional blacksmithing groups. His work reflects a sincere approach to working with metals and emphasizes the methods and reasoning behind joinery and the design aspects dictated by the limits and characteristics of the material.  In 2000 Dereck started the New England School of Metalwork in Auburn, Maine where he is the Metalsmithing Program Director, Administrative Director, and the resident blacksmithing instructor. Dereck pursues custom architectural and interior commissions as well as one of a kind and limited series of hand forged sculpture and custom blades.
