Registration Information
All workshops take place at the Sabbathaday Lake Shaker Museum in New Gloucester, Maine, and require preregistration. To register for a workshop listed below, send the workshop name, your name, address, and telephone number along with a check made payable to the Shaker Museum for the full workshop registration fee to:

Please note that workshop size is limited as noted in each workshop description below. Register early to avoid disappointment. Registrations are accepted in the order they are received by the Museum office.

Should you wish to cancel your workshop registration, refund of the registration fee is dependent upon the timing of the cancellation and any expenses already incurred by the Museum at the time of cancellation.

The registration fee will be fully refunded to the participant if the museum cancels a workshop.

Members of the Friends of the Shakers are entitled to a $5.00 discount on workshop fees.

Please read the workshop descriptions carefully. Many workshops require participants to bring tools to class or have other special requirements.

Shaking the Family Tree
Saturday, June 8, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
(Bring your own lunch; a beverage will be provided)
Instructor: Larry S. Glatz

A beginner’s guide to genealogical research. This workshop will review some of the many sources from which a family history may be constructed and will consider a number of practical strategies for their use. Many examples will be drawn from the materials of the Shaker Library, but other resources (both physical and electronic) will be examined as well. The program is designed for interested amateurs, hobbyists, and those who may have thought about creating a family history but are not quite sure where or how to begin. Reference book included in fee.

Planning and Planting Your Herb Garden

Saturday, June 29, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
(Bring your own lunch; a beverage will be provided)
Instructor: Betsey-Ann Golon, Common Folk Farm

A “down-to-earth” class on garden design with an emphasis on function, use and location of an herb garden. Discussion and literature will provide garden layout, historical designs, and growth characteristics for a wide variety of herbs. Participants will receive several field-grown herbs from the Sabbathday Lake Shaker gardens. Students should bring information about their proposed garden site for individual help and suggestions.

Chair Caning

Saturday, July 13, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
(Bring your own lunch; a beverage will be provided)
Instructor: Fran Faulkner

Learn the 7-step method of chair caning. Bring a chair to class that is clean and sound. This class will be restricted to hand woven chairs. (These chairs can be identified by the holes drilled through the seat and/or back for weaving the cane.) Supplies will be provided to get you started on your first chair. Fran will be available the following Saturday (July 20) for those needing more guidance.

For Use and Delight: Make an Edible Garden Wreath
Saturday, August 3, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
(Bring your own lunch; a beverage will be provided)
Instructor: Betsey-Ann Golon, Common Folk Farm

A hands-on class where participants will leave with a delightful and functional wreath or swag of edible herbs traditionally grown in the gardens of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. Betsey will offer growing, cutting and drying information, as well as recipes for using your herbal creation. Class will include a tour of the herb gardens.

Holiday Workshop: Make a Christmas Tree Skirt
Saturday, August 17, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
(Bring your own lunch; a beverage will be provided)
Instructor: Nancy L. Wilcox

Participants will make a 45” circular tree skirt. Several layouts of patterns, trimmings, lacings, rickrack, and sequins will be available to make your skirt an original. All materials provided. Please bring scissors, thimbles, and your imagination. Note: Problems with the skirt? There will be a follow-up session on September 21 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m.

Holiday Workshop: Make a Wall Hanging or Christmas Stocking

Saturday, August 24, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
(Bring your own lunch; a beverage will be provided)
Instructor: Nancy Wilcox

Participants will make either a holiday wall hanging or a Christmas stocking. Patterns, lacings, trimmings, rickrack, and sequins will be available to help create a distinctive and cheering holiday decoration. All materials provided. Please bring scissors and thimbles. Pack up and bring along your imagination. Note: Problems with your project? Follow-up session on September 21 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m.

Fee: $50.00 (materials included; preregistration required.
