The Human and the Eternal: Shaker Art In Its Many Forms

Shaker Art Exhibit at Sabbathday Lake The Shaker Museum is currently exhibiting more than one hundred items from the museum's folk art collection. Showcased are artistic expressions by the Shakers from the 1800's into the late twentieth century.

The exhibit is open through October 6, 2008 (closed Sundays) and from May 22 to October 5, 2009 (closed Sundays).

Objects on display include Shaker gift drawings, Shaker drawings of the Maine Shaker villages, oval boxes with woodburned designs, wood carvings, embroidered boxes, fancy baskets, decorated utility items, hooked rugs, painted frames, needlework, mini pails and sieves, still lifes, landscapes, painting on silk, tins, vases, wood, glass, quilts and samplers. Creations from the Maine Shaker villages (Alfred and Sabbathday Lake) are the primary sources for the exhibit but other Shaker communities are represented as well.
Funding for "The Human and the Eternal" has come from the Maine Community Foundation, the Maine Arts Commission, the Maine Humanities Council and private donors.
